Chapter 9 - The Gavel's Echo

The county courthouse was a grand, intimidating building of gray stone and heavy oak doors. Ryan and Sarah sat side-by-side on a rigid wooden bench outside the courtroom, their fingers intertwined. Today was the hearing for the permanent restraining order against Eleanor.
When they were called inside, the air felt thick. Eleanor sat at the opposing table, wearing a conservative navy suit, her hair perfectly coiffed. She looked every inch the respectable, upstanding citizen she pretended to be. When she glanced at Ryan, her eyes held a chilling mix of sorrow and accusation, attempting to play the victim.
But the judge, a stern woman with decades of experience, saw right through the performance. Ryan and Sarah’s lawyer presented the police report, photographs of Sarah’s bruising, and, most damning of all, the manipulative letter Eleanor had sent.
Eleanor’s attorney tried to argue that the physical altercation was a misunderstanding, a desperate act of a concerned grandmother. The judge cut him off.

"Assaulting a mother in front of her child is not an act of concern; it is an act of violence," the judge stated, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "The permanent restraining order is granted. Mrs. Whitmore, you are to have no contact with your son, your daughter-in-law, or your grandson."
Walking down the courthouse steps into the bright afternoon sun, Ryan felt a massive weight lift from his shoulders. The legal shield was officially in place. Eleanor could no longer hide behind her title as a mother; she was legally recognized as a threat, and they were finally safe.
