Chapter 1 - The Storm Inside

The rain lashed against the windshield of Ryan Whitmore’s truck as he pulled into the driveway of his suburban home. It had been a grueling three-day work trip, and all he wanted was the warmth of his house, the soft smile of his wife, Sarah, and the energetic laughter of his toddler, Leo. He killed the engine, grabbed his heavy black duffel bag from the passenger seat, and made a dash for the front door, seeking refuge from the torrential downpour.

Stepping into the quiet hallway, Ryan shook the water from his hair. The house was unnervingly silent. Usually, the sound of the front door opening was enough to send Leo running down the hall. Ryan walked softly toward the bright, white-marbled kitchen, calling out a gentle greeting.

As he turned the corner, the words died in his throat.

He froze, his muscles locking as his eyes took in the scene. He dropped his black duffel bag with a heavy thud, his hand instinctively flying to cover his mouth in pure shock.

There, huddled on the cold marble floor, was Sarah. She was wearing her gray hoodie, her arms wrapped protectively around a sobbing Leo. But it was Sarah’s face that made Ryan’s blood run cold—a dark, angry bruise surrounded her left eye and cheek, a stark contrast to her pale skin. Scattered across the floor next to them were dozens of bright orange pills, spilled from an overturned prescription bottle.

Standing directly over them, tall and imposing in a black button-down shirt, was his estranged mother, Eleanor. Her posture was rigid, her expression unreadable as she looked down at the cowering mother and child.

"What did you just do?" Ryan whispered, the sheer disbelief in his voice giving way to a rising, uncontrollable tide of panic and rage.
