Chapter 5: The Arrival of Law Enforcement

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom swung open with a resounding thud, admitting three uniformed police officers led by a seasoned detective whose badge gleamed under the opulent chandeliers. The murmuring crowd parted instantly, creating a clear, unobstructed path toward the center of the drama where Julian stood holding the tainted glass, flanked by the defiant Beatrice and the watchful, exhausted waitress. Lieutenant Miller, a man with sharp gray eyes and a demeanor that brooked no nonsense, scanned the room with practiced efficiency, his gaze quickly locking onto the glowing smartwatch display that Julian extended toward him without a word.

Julian stepped forward, his posture rigid, presenting the digital evidence and the physical glass with calm precision. “Lieutenant Miller. My name is Julian Sterling. This device contains high-definition footage of an attempted poisoning orchestrated by the woman standing before you, in active conspiracy with my chief financial officer, Marcus Vance. The glass she handed me contains traces of a fast-acting neurotoxin, which I request your forensics team secure immediately.”

Lieutenant Miller nodded curtly, signaling his subordinate officers to move in. Two officers flanked Beatrice, their movements professional and respectful yet entirely unyielding. As the cold steel of handcuffs was pressed against her wrists, Beatrice let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that grated against the acoustic perfection of the room. She offered no physical resistance, knowing that fighting the police in front of dozens of high-society witnesses would only guarantee a harsher public trial, but her parting glare promised relentless malice.

“You won’t enjoy what comes next, Julian,” Beatrice hissed as the officers guided her firmly toward the exit. “Marcus has already secured the board signatures. Your empire is hollowed out from the inside, and no amount of digital video will save your stock price by morning.”

Julian watched her departure without a flicker of emotion on his face, though the internal toll of her words was undeniable. Once the heavy doors closed behind the disgraced woman and her escort, the oppressive weight in the grand ballroom seemed to lift slightly, replaced by an uneasy, expectant quiet. The guests began to disperse in hurried whispers, eager to flee a crime scene that promised to dominate the morning financial news and tabloid headlines alike.

Clara remained standing near the service alcove, quietly gathering her fallen tray, her shift nearly over and her mind racing with the realization of how close she had come to being framed for a capital crime. She had only dropped the glass because Beatrice had intentionally tripped her from behind in the frantic second before the toast—a detail she had not yet shared aloud, saving it for when the authorities took her formal statement. Julian turned his attention away from the departed officers and walked slowly across the polished floor toward the young blonde waitress, his expression softening as he recognized the immense debt of gratitude he owed her.
