Chapter 1: The Broken Glass and the Frozen Ballroom

The crystalline chandelier above the grand ballroom of the Sterling Estate cast a brilliant, cold illumination over the polished mahogany floors, reflecting a scene of utter chaos frozen in time. Clara stood motionless, her white button-down shirt slightly damp at the hem, the dark red vest straining against her chest as she drew in a sharp, ragged breath. A fresh scratch on her forehead throbbed dully, a physical souvenir of the frantic rush that had preceded this disastrous moment. Just inches away, Julian stood in his impeccable grey tuxedo jacket, his white shirt stiffly starched, a black bow tie resting neatly beneath his chin. In his hand, he held a delicate crystal glass that Clara had dropped only seconds before, the remnants of sparkling champagne pooling inside while a dangerous silence descended upon the surrounding crowd.
Clara’s blue eyes were wide with a mixture of shock and lingering terror. Her chest rose and fell rapidly under the thin cotton of her uniform. The weight of the ballroom’s collective gaze pressed down on her like a physical barrier, yet her focus remained entirely locked on Julian’s bewildered expression. Gathering the remnants of her composure, she forced her voice past the tight knot in her throat, letting the words slip out in a breathless, bewildered whisper.
“What on earth are you doing?” Clara asked, her tone carrying the raw confusion of someone who had just stepped out of a nightmare only to find another waiting in reality.
May you like
Julian did not answer immediately. He stared at the glass in his palm, his jaw tightening as the ambient noise of the elite gathering began to fade into a dull hum. Before he could process the peculiar lightness of the vessel or the strange way Julian’s fingers had intercepted it mid-air, a sharp movement cut through the stillness. Beatrice, standing nearby in her deep red velvet off-the-shoulder gown, stepped forward with predatory grace. The heavy ruby necklace at her throat caught the chandelier light, flashing like a drop of fresh blood against her pale skin. Her emerald earrings swayed violently as she turned her fury upon the young waitress, her face contorted into an ugly, mask-like grimace of artificial panic.
“Are you insane? Security, get her out!” Beatrice shouted, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings with enough manufactured authority to mobilize the guards stationed by the mahogany doors. Two burly men in identical black suits immediately detached themselves from the shadows, stepping forward with purposeful strides to seize Clara by the arms and banish her from the hall before further questions could be asked.
