CHAPTER 4: THE LESSON
Mr. Harris had taught at Jefferson High for thirty-five years.
He had watched thousands of students grow up.
He looked at Connor.
Then at the twins.
"I've seen this before."
Everyone listened.
"People become dangerous when they stop seeing another person as fully human."
Connor remained silent.
Mr. Harris continued.
"When Marco turned around..."
He smiled sadly.
"...you were forced to see the same face twice."
The words settled over the room.
"You couldn't separate your action from its consequence anymore."
Connor finally looked at Marco.
Then Elena.
Then back again.
For the first time, he truly understood what had happened.
It wasn't fear that stopped him.
It was recognition.
He hadn't just slapped a stranger.
He had slapped someone's sister.
Someone's daughter.
Someone who mattered deeply to another person standing only a few feet away.
The realization stayed with him.
Long after the meeting ended.
