Part 1: The Badge in the Torn Bag
The lobby remained frozen.
Even Veronica Hale stopped pulling.
The young woman knelt on the marble floor, one hand pressed against her bruised ribs while the other disappeared into the torn canvas bag she had protected through miles of dust, fear, and pain.
A security guard stepped forward.
"Ma'am, whatever you're doing, stop."
The girl ignored him.

Slowly, she withdrew a leather folder.
It looked worn.
Ordinary.
Nothing about it explained why her fingers trembled while holding it.
Veronica laughed.
"Oh, please. Is this some pathetic attempt to prove you belong here?"
The girl finally looked up.
Her eyes were tired.
Bruised.
But steady.
Then she opened the folder.
The first thing visible was a silver identification badge.
A receptionist gasped.
The bellman nearly dropped the luggage cart.
Behind the front desk, assistant manager Daniel Reyes went pale.
Because he recognized the name immediately.
Not just recognized it.
Feared it.
The badge read:
AURORA BENNETT
Senior Trustee Representative
Bennett Hospitality International
The company that owned Solmere Resort.
The company that owned every resort in the chain.
The company whose founder was one of the most powerful hotel magnates in America.
Veronica's smile disappeared.
The lobby became silent enough to hear the fountain in the courtyard outside.
"No," Veronica whispered.
Aurora slowly removed a second item.
A sealed document.
Then a third.
A notarized authorization bearing the signature of billionaire founder Charles Bennett himself.
Daniel Reyes stared at the paper.
His hands began shaking.
"Oh my God..."
Veronica stepped backward.
"This is ridiculous."
Aurora finally spoke.
Her voice was hoarse.
"You dragged me across property that belongs to my family."
The words hit the lobby like thunder.
Several guests stood up immediately.
Phones appeared.
Whispers spread.
Veronica looked around and realized something terrifying.
Nobody was looking at Aurora anymore.
They were looking at her.
Like prey.
Then Daniel hurried around the desk.
"Miss Bennett..."
His voice cracked.
"I am so sorry."
Aurora tried to stand.
Pain flashed across her face.
Her legs nearly gave out.
Daniel caught her before she fell.
The entire resort watched.
And for the first time that afternoon...
Veronica Hale looked afraid.
