Chapter 1: The room that couldn't breathe

For ten seconds, nobody moved.

The ballroom, which just moments before had been sparkling with champagne and fake laughter, now looked like a sealed tomb.

Steel barriers covered each exit.

The music had died.

The smiles had disappeared.

And Preston Vale, the man who had beaten me up in front of three hundred witnesses, finally seemed to be afraid.

His friends distanced themselves from him as if fear were contagious.

"What did you do?" Preston whispered.

I looked beyond him.

To the cameras.

To the guests.

To every coward who had looked and chosen silence.

I protected myself, I said.

A man near the west exit shouted:

You can't keep us here!

I turned around slowly.

Nobody's trapped, I said. Not yet.

Then the giant screens above the stage flickered and lit up.

At first, there was only static.

Then the recording surfaced.

Preston pushing me against the marble wall.

Preston holding my arm.

Preston was laughing while I was bleeding.

Gasps echoed through the room.

Her mother, Helena Vale, rose from her table, the diamond necklace trembling against her throat.

"Turn that off," he ordered.

Nobody moved.

Because for the first time in that room, his last name meant nothing.

Preston turned toward the screen, his face losing all color.

"That's been edited," he snapped. "It's fake."

My father's voice came through the living room speakers.

Cold.

Controlled.

Unmistakable.

Then you won't mind watching the rest.

The screen changed.

Another video played.

It wasn't for tonight.

A private office.

Preston handing an envelope to a police captain.

Then another video.

A young woman crying in a hospital hallway.

Then another one.

A business partner begging him not to destroy his family.

The room fell into a silence I had never heard before.

It was no surprise.

It was my fault.

Because many of them knew it.

Some had helped.

Others had remained silent because silence was profitable.

Preston looked at me as if I had become something impossible.

"Who are you?" he murmured.

I took a step closer.

My name is Evelyn Cross.

His mother remained motionless.

Several men at the front tables turned pale.

Because they knew that name.

They knew my father.

Not as a businessman.

Not as a donor.

But as the man who built the private security network that protected half of the city's secrets.

May you like

And tonight…

He had decided to open the vault.
