Chapter 5: The Digital Verdict

The hum of the laboratory equipment seemed to amplify as the digital clock on the wall ticked past the third hour. None of them had touched the coffee offered by the orderly. Julian paced the length of the small waiting room, the heels of his leather dress shoes clicking rhythmically against the linoleum, while Elena remained statuesque on the sofa, her hands folded in her lap. Evelyn had not moved from her corner, her gaze fixed on the heavy glass door that separated them from the testing suite.

A soft chime echoed from the hallway, followed by the quiet click of the door opening. Dr. Harrison stepped into the room, holding a single sheet of cream-colored paper. His expression was professionally neutral, yet there was a subtle softening around the corners of his eyes that betrayed the gravity of the data he held.

Julian stopped pacing instantly. He stepped to Elena’s side, his hand resting lightly on the back of the sofa.

"The results are complete," Dr. Harrison announced quietly, stepping forward to hand the report to Evelyn first. Then, thinking better of it, he placed a second copy on the table between them so all three could read the parameters simultaneously.

Evelyn’s hands shook visibly as she lifted the paper. Her eyes scanned the complex matrix of genetic markers, scrolling past the technical jargon until they locked onto the final summary statistic.

*Probability of Maternity: 99.998%.*

The paper slipped from Evelyn’s fingers, fluttering softly down to the carpet. She did not scream or cheer; instead, a profound, shuddering sigh escaped her lips, sounding almost like a sob of exhaustion. She covered her face with both hands, her shoulders shaking violently as the decades of suppressed grief finally broke through her defenses.

Elena stared at the numbers on the page. The 9.998 percent certainty stood out against the white background like a neon sign. Her mind raced backward through every hostile dinner party, every cutting remark about her wardrobe, every cold glance across the boardroom table where Evelyn had tried to buy her out of Julian’s life. The irony was suffocating. The woman who had fought hardest against her entry into the Vance family was the very person whose blood ran through her veins.

"It’s real," Julian murmured, reading over Elena’s shoulder. He looked at Elena, his expression a complex knot of relief, shock, and lingering unease. "Elena... you’re her daughter. You’re my..." He stopped, a sudden realization hitting him with the force of a physical blow.

Elena looked up at Julian, her amber-flecked eyes wide with the same horrifying realization.

They were legally married. They had exchanged vows before God, the state, and two hundred witnesses just six hours ago. And they shared blood.
