CHAPTER TWO:The Truth Cannot Be Bought

The operating room doors remained closed.

The red emergency light continued to glow.

Marcus Thorne had built an empire by making impossible decisions under impossible pressure.

Tonight, none of that mattered.

Every minute felt like another lifetime.

He paced the hallway, his tuxedo stained with Khloe's blood.

Board members.

Politicians.

Investors.

They all stood at a respectful distance.

No one dared interrupt him.

No one had ever seen Marcus Thorne look helpless.

Richard Bennett stepped out of the elevator.

His expression was calm.

His eyes were not.

Marcus looked up.

"How is she?"

Richard answered honestly.

"They're still fighting to stabilize both of them."

Marcus closed his eyes.

"This is my fault."

Richard didn't argue.

"You invited Isabella."

"I thought she would behave."

"You assumed decency."

Richard's voice remained level.

"Some people mistake kindness for weakness."

Marcus looked toward the operating room.

"I should have protected Khloe."

"You still can."

Marcus frowned.

Richard handed him a secure tablet.

"The security footage."

Marcus hesitated.

"I don't know if I can watch."

"You need to."

His thumb pressed the screen.

The recording began.

The timestamp flashed across the top.

9:41:12 P.M.

Khloe entered the suite alone.

She removed her heels.

She rubbed her swollen ankles.

She looked exhausted.

Moments later...

The door opened.

Isabella walked in without knocking.

There was no greeting.

No smile.

Only contempt.

Marcus watched every second.

Every insult.

Every threat.

Every deliberate step toward his wife.

Then came the first shove.

Khloe stumbled backward.

Her spine struck the marble table.

Marcus gripped the tablet so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"No..."

Richard remained silent.

The video continued.

Khloe never raised her hand.

She never threatened Isabella.

She tried only to shield her unborn child.

Then Isabella drove her heel into Khloe's side.

Marcus stopped breathing.

The impact echoed through the silent hallway.

Even through a screen, it was horrifying.

The recording didn't end there.

It captured Isabella adjusting her dress.

Fixing her hair.

Practicing frightened expressions.

Then...

The suite door opened.

Marcus himself appeared on camera.

Exactly as he remembered.

Only now he saw what he had missed.

Less than two seconds before he entered—

Isabella deliberately scratched her own wrist against the broken crystal.

Just enough to leave a mark.

She rehearsed one trembling breath.

Then pointed at Khloe.

"She attacked me."

Marcus slowly lowered the tablet.

His entire body shook with controlled rage.

"I almost..."

His voice cracked.

"I almost questioned my own wife."

Richard placed a hand on his shoulder.

"But you didn't."

Marcus stared through the operating room doors.

"I should have believed her sooner."

"You came to her."

"It wasn't soon enough."

Richard's expression hardened.

"No."

"It wasn't."

Twenty minutes later...

The executive conference room looked nothing like a hospital office.

It looked like a courtroom.

Two detectives.

Hospital attorneys.

Corporate legal counsel.

Daniel Carter.

Richard Bennett.

Isabella Rossi sat alone at one end of the polished table.

Her confidence had begun to crack.

Still...

She smiled.

"My attorney is coming."

One detective nodded.

"That's your right."

She leaned back.

"When he arrives, this misunderstanding will disappear."

Richard folded his hands.

"Would you like to see the evidence first?"

She shrugged.

"It won't matter."

Daniel connected the tablet to the conference room screen.

The video filled the wall.

No one spoke.

They watched.

Every lie.

Every shove.

Every kick.

Every fake tear.

Every practiced expression.

Every calculated movement.

The room remained silent long after the recording ended.

Isabella stared at the frozen image on the screen.

She looked like a stranger.

Cold.

Cruel.

Deliberate.

"No..."

she whispered.

"That's been edited."

Daniel answered immediately.

"It hasn't."

"My experts—"

"The recording was captured simultaneously by four synchronized security cameras."

He pressed another button.

The same assault appeared from a second angle.

Then a third.

Then a fourth.

Every perspective confirmed the same truth.

There was nowhere left to hide.

One detective leaned forward.

"Miss Rossi..."

"Do you wish to change your statement?"

She swallowed.

"I..."

The conference room door suddenly opened.

A sharply dressed attorney entered.

"I'm representing Miss Rossi."

He confidently placed his briefcase on the table.

"My client has been falsely—"

Daniel handed him the tablet.

"Please watch."

The attorney frowned.

Five minutes later...

He quietly closed the tablet.

His face had turned pale.

He looked at Isabella.

"Is there..."

"...anything you neglected to tell me?"

She couldn't answer.

The lawyer removed his glasses.

Then, to everyone's surprise, he stepped away from her chair.

"I cannot present testimony that contradicts verified evidence."

He gathered his files.

"Miss Rossi..."

"I strongly advise you to cooperate."

Without another word...

He walked out.

The sound of the closing door echoed through the room.

For the first time in her life...

Isabella Rossi sat completely alone.

At that exact moment...

The operating room doors finally opened.

Marcus shot to his feet.

A surgeon removed his mask.

His face showed exhaustion.

Marcus searched his expression.

"Doctor?"

There was a long pause.

Then...

"They're alive."

Marcus nearly collapsed with relief.

"The baby?"

"A little girl."

Richard closed his eyes in silent gratitude.

The doctor smiled gently.

"She's fighting."

"So is her mother."

"But..."

Marcus's heart tightened again.

"But what?"

The doctor's smile faded.

"Mrs. Thorne suffered significant abdominal trauma."

"The next forty-eight hours will determine whether she makes a full recovery."

Marcus looked through the small glass window into the recovery unit.

Khloe lay unconscious.

Machines surrounded her.

One tiny bassinet stood beside the bed.

Inside...

His daughter slept peacefully.

Marcus rested one trembling hand against the glass.

His voice was barely audible.

"I failed you once."

His eyes moved from his wife...

to his newborn daughter.

"I won't fail either of you again."

Behind him...

Richard Bennett received a phone call.

He listened for only a few seconds.

Then he smiled.

"What is it?" Marcus asked.

Richard slipped the phone back into his pocket.

"The district attorney has reviewed the footage."

"They're filing charges tonight."

Marcus looked back toward the conference room.

May you like

For Isabella Rossi...

The nightmare had only just begun.
