PART 4 – The Woman Who Stole a Billion-Dollar Life

The room fell silent.
Eleanor stared at the elderly woman standing in the doorway.
Neither of them spoke.
Margaret quietly closed the office door and dismissed the staff waiting outside.
Only then did Eleanor finally ask,
“Who are you?”
The woman lowered her eyes.
“My name is Linda Brooks.”
“I worked at St. Catherine’s Private Hospital twenty-five years ago.”
Eleanor’s fingers tightened around the old photograph.
“You were a nurse?”
Linda slowly shook her head.
“No.”
“I cleaned the maternity floor.”
Her voice trembled.
“And I have lived with my guilt every single day since.”
Eleanor motioned toward the chair across from her.
“Sit.”
Linda remained standing.
“I don’t deserve to.”
“Sit.”
This time it wasn’t a request.
Linda obeyed.
For several seconds, she couldn’t lift her head.
Finally she whispered,
“I saw everything.”
Eleanor’s heart pounded.
“The night your daughter was born…”
“There was a terrible storm.”
“The hospital lost power for several minutes.”
“The backup generators didn’t start immediately.”
“I was cleaning the hallway when I saw another woman leave her room carrying a baby.”
Eleanor felt her pulse racing.
“Who was she?”
“I never knew her name.”
“She looked frightened.”
“But she wasn’t running away.”
Linda swallowed hard.
“She was looking for your room.”
As Linda spoke, memories she had buried for decades returned with painful clarity.
The hospital had been in complete chaos.
Doctors rushed through dark corridors carrying emergency lights.
Families waited anxiously.
The nursery had been temporarily moved while nurses checked life-support equipment.
Security cameras stopped recording for nearly twelve minutes.
At the time, everyone blamed the storm.
No one imagined someone would use those twelve minutes to change two lives forever.
“I saw her enter your room.”
Linda’s hands shook.
“When she came out…”
“…the baby she carried was wearing your daughter’s hospital bracelet.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“No…”
Linda began crying.
“I wanted to stop her.”
“But I was young.”
“I was scared.”
“The hospital director told everyone the records had been damaged.”
“The police investigated.”
“But they never looked for a baby swap.”
“Everyone believed nothing had happened.”
Except Linda.
She had known.
And she had remained silent.
For twenty-five years.
Eleanor stood and slowly walked toward the window.
Below, she could see Maya helping one of the elderly gardeners plant fresh roses.
She wasn’t being paid to do that.
She had simply noticed he was struggling.
A few feet away, Chloe stepped out of a luxury sports car carrying shopping bags.
She walked past the gardener without even looking at him.
The contrast was impossible to ignore.
For years, Eleanor had blamed herself.
She believed she had somehow failed as a mother.
Now…
she wondered if she had simply been raising someone else’s child.
“Why now?”
Eleanor asked without turning around.
Linda wiped her tears.
“Because I’m dying.”
Silence.
“The doctors gave me a few months.”
“I couldn’t meet God carrying this secret.”
She reached into her purse.
“I kept something.”
From inside an old envelope, she carefully removed a tiny silver ankle bracelet.
Time had darkened the metal.
But the engraving remained clear.
BABY VANCE
Eleanor covered her mouth.
She remembered ordering two identical bracelets before giving birth.
One for the hospital.
One to keep forever.
The one in her nursery…
was suddenly meaningless.
Because this bracelet had never left the hospital.
Until now.
Just then, someone knocked urgently.
Margaret entered, visibly shaken.
“Mrs. Vance…”
“What is it?”
“The laboratory director is here.”
Eleanor frowned.
“I didn’t ask him to come.”
“He said it’s an emergency.”
Minutes later, Dr. Michael Grant entered carrying a locked metal case.
His suit was wrinkled.
There was a bruise across his forehead.
He looked exhausted.
“What happened to you?”
“They broke into my laboratory.”
“I tried to stop them.”
He placed the case on Eleanor’s desk.
“They stole every sample.”
“I know.”
“But they didn’t find this.”
He opened the case.
Inside lay a single sealed DNA report.
Eleanor stared.
“I thought everything was destroyed.”
“I made one paper copy before the system was compromised.”
He slowly slid it across the desk.
“I didn’t trust electronic files.”
Neither of them reached for it.
Because they both understood.
Once the envelope was opened…
there would be no going back.
At that exact moment, across the estate, Chloe walked toward Maya.
Her smile looked unusually friendly.
“Maya.”
Maya looked surprised.
“Miss Vance?”
“I owe you an apology.”
“You do?”
“I haven’t been very kind.”
Maya smiled politely.
“It’s alright.”
“No.”
Chloe shook her head.
“I’d like to make it up to you.”
She pointed toward the old greenhouse behind the mansion.
“I need help carrying some decorations.”
Maya hesitated.
“Now?”
“It will only take a minute.”
From an upstairs window, Linda happened to notice the two women walking away together.
Something about Chloe’s smile made her uneasy.
Very uneasy.
Back inside the office, Eleanor finally opened the DNA report.
Her hands trembled.
She forced herself to read.
The room remained completely silent.
Thirty seconds passed.
Then one minute.
Finally…
the report slipped from Eleanor’s hands onto the desk.
Tears filled her eyes.
She looked at Dr. Grant.
“You checked it twice?”
“Three times.”
“No mistakes?”
“None.”
The report confirmed what her heart had somehow known before science ever did.
Probability of maternity: 99.9999%.
Biological mother: Eleanor Vance.
Biological daughter: Maya Collins.
Eleanor broke down.
For the first time in decades…
the strongest woman on Wall Street cried like a mother who had just found the child she believed fate had stolen forever.
Before anyone could speak, the office door burst open.
Linda stumbled inside, struggling to breathe.
“They’re taking her!”
Eleanor rushed forward.
“Who?”
“Chloe…”
“…she lured Maya to the greenhouse.”
“I heard her call someone.”
“They said…”
Linda’s voice cracked.
“…they said Maya can never leave the estate alive.”
The color drained from Eleanor’s face.
Without another word, she ran.
Not as a billionaire.
Not as the head of a global empire.
But as a mother racing to save the daughter she had only just found.
As she reached the gardens, she heard a scream echo from inside the abandoned greenhouse.
“Maya!”
She pushed the door open—
And froze.
The glass roof above Maya had begun to collapse.
