The California Post visited the county’s 144,000-square-foot ballot processing facility on Thursday. Reporters saw dozens of vacant workstations while hundreds of thousands of ballots awaited processing across California and Los Angeles. The urgent need to count remaining votes contrasted with the understaffed scene at the warehouse.
Just 77,521 more ballots have been processed since the June 2 election night, county officials announced Wednesday. An estimated 713,180 ballots remain unprocessed.
Much of the facility appeared understaffed. Rows of workstations stood empty with several vacant chair sections. About 25 bins of ballots were ready for manual review in one area, but no employees sat at nearby desks. In the preparation zone, roughly 75 workers handled envelopes and ballots, though the space could hold more than double that number.
Steve Hilton, Republican frontrunner for governor, said Thursday he would urge Governor Gavin Newsom to create an Emergency Election Count Accelerator Corps to assist counties with ballot backlogs.
“California is the laughing stock of the nation when it comes to election reporting. We are the fourth-largest economy in the world, home to Silicon Valley and some of the most advanced technology on earth, yet government bureaucrats need a month to count fewer than 10 million ballots,” Hilton said.
The Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk office faces scrutiny as Los Angeles County spends nearly $336 million yearly on the department with over 1,100 budgeted positions. Dean Logan, who leads the office and manages elections, earns $448,179 annually. The county has more than 5.8 million registered voters.
President Donald Trump criticized the pace on Truth Social.
“The Dumocrats are at it again! They are trying to STEAL THE GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA PRIMARY, AND THE MAYOR OF LOS ANGELES, PRIMARY, AWAY FROM TWO GREAT REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES. Here we go with the very late and massive numbers of MAIL IN BALLOTS,” he posted.
Gavin Newsom’s office responded on X, saying there is much misinformation about the election — including from the President — and shared a CNN explainer.
“And yes, for the record: we wish the votes were counted faster, too,” the post concluded.
A staff member at the facility told reporters not to be “fooled by what you see” when asked about empty workstations but gave no further explanation.
Other states that held elections Tuesday are nearly done: New Jersey at about 93%, New Mexico and Montana near 98%. Los Angeles County’s next update is due Thursday evening, but with over 700,000 ballots left, experts say final results could take weeks.

Arturo felt his heart pounding in his ears.
—What are you talking about?
Constanza smoothed her designer dress with terrifying calm.

The young woman raised her face, bathed in tears, trembling from head to toe.

"Name and power are all that matter in this country!" Constanza shouted, finally losing her temper. "I sacrificed everything for this life! And I'm not going to let some bastard and her disgusting offspring take what's mine!"
Carmen, trembling with rage, confronted her.
—She's your blood! She's your daughter and your grandson!
"I don't have a daughter!" Constanza spat out. "I have a mistake that should have been thrown in the trash 26 years ago!"
Lupita let out a guttural groan. Her hands clutched her stomach. Her knees buckled. She fell heavily to the ground.
"My little girl!" cried Carmen, kneeling beside her.
Lupita was breathing in short gasps, her face contorted with pain.
—It hurts… it's tearing me apart…
Arturo circled the granite island in one second. He was the first to see it. A thick, dark red stain was beginning to stain Lupita's white uniform and spread across the marble floor.
"Canelo, get out of the way!" Arturo shouted to the Belgian Shepherd of the house, who had begun to bark desperately at Constanza.
Arturo's protective instinct was fully ignited.
"Get the armored truck ready!" he yelled to his head of security, who was appearing in the hallway. "Call Ángeles Hospital! I want the best operating room, gynecologists, and my team of lawyers waiting in 10 minutes!"
Lupita wept with primal panic, clutching her apron.
